One of the main questions our customers ask us is, “What is the difference between continuous and strobe lighting?” Continuous lighting uses a constant light source to light the object, meaning that your lights will stay on during the entirety of your photo shoot. Continuous lighting is recommended for beginners. Strobe lighting uses a flash of light at the moment your camera shutter opens to illuminate your subject. Many professionals use this type of lighting because it offers more control of the light.

Flashes are used in photography to produces an instantaneous flash of artificial light at a color temperature of about 5500 K to help illuminate a scene. This strobe light can be used both outdoor and indoor. The 400 watt strobe is a good mid-range strobe, good for studio work and larger scale on location shoots alike. It is high quality and easy to adjust, both in position and brightness. It can act as a slave, making this strobe easy to use in any environment.

great lights March 1, 2015

I am very pleased with this light. The controls are well made and the entire unit is solid and confidence inspiring. As others have mentioned the protective cap does not fit on the light with the modeling lamp in place. I solved this with a quick trip to the dollar store and some inexpensive plastic cups. The lights are not super compact but the quality of the construction is more important to me. I've used these on a couple of assignments and found them to be plenty powerful for portrait work and able to create an even quality of light while using a softball or umbrella. I am a professional photographer and have used many moonlights over the years including the brand from outer space. I believe these lights are as good as any available in this wattage and price range. Cowboy Studio service is fast and accurate.

Glazzzmann July 20, 2012

This monolight is well built and performs very well. It may not quite 400 W.S. but it is not much less. At $150 it is a solid metal monolight with a internal fan for cooling. The recycle time at full power is about 1-2 seconds, at reduced power it is much less. My only minor complaint is that the modeling light has to be removed to place the protective cover over the front of this unit. The cost is excellent at about a third or a quarter of the cost of a similar name brand unit. The shots seemed consistant in my two shooting sessions so far. As long as this unit holds up long term it is well worth the money. I plan to order another as soon as I have the extra money.
